A Comprehensive Overview of Digital Image Processing: Techniques, Application, and Evolving Technologies

Abstract This paper provides a comprehensive and in-depth overview of digital image processing, covering its core principles, technical approaches, and the technological advancement propping its evolution. We initiate by defining what is image processing and exploring its critical application role in image manipulation and extracting valuable information from visual data. Images are more than just visual elements and tools that convey the visual representation of something; they hold extensive information that can enhance our understanding of the physical environment. Digital Image Processing translates these images into discrete numerical representations called pixels. These allow computers to understand and analyze them efficiently. We delve into the main stages of image processing i.e. image acquisition, pre-processing, and manipulation and image analysis. We discuss all these stages of image processing in detail with an elucidation of key techniques like feature extraction, image classification, image enhancement, image enhancement techniques, image compression, segmentation, types of segmentation, image restoration, and image restoration techniques, including image deraining or dedusting, image denoising, and image deblurring. The innovation of Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Vision transformers (ViTs) models revolutionized the field of digital image processing, bringing unprecedented efficiency and accuracy to object detection, feature extraction, image segmentation, and medical image analysis. The CNNs and ViTs have significantly advanced the field of digital image processing, addressing a broad spectrum of challenges and representing a major technological leap. The scope of digital image processing is vast and extends across diverse domains such as remote sensing, medical imaging, robotics, and computer vision. The primary aim of this review paper is to provide a broad yet detailed perspective on DIP, which offers insights into both legacy and state-of-the-art technologies. The discussion emphasizes the fundamental role of cutting-edge technologies like CNNs, which address a variety of image-processing tasks to foster DIP’s growth. This paper focuses on underscoring the role of evolving technologies in developing the future trajectory of DIP and enabling novel solutions in numerous domains.
